BlokFile.NLM is the solution for Admins who want to control what files are available from there servers, or want to know who is accessing which files.
BlokFile can help you avoid having servers accumulating masses of undesirable files. MP3's, AVI's, MPG's, WAV's - any and all unwanted, un-needed files. They take up space on your server disks, they take time and space to backup. Whether you want to rid your servers of these files to enforce internal policies or legal requirements - BlokFile is the solution.
Basically, BlokFile takes a list of volume & file wildcards, then prevents the access or creation of any files meeting that specification. Attempted access to blocked files can be logged to the server console, to a log file, and email alerts can be sent to admins.
Additionally it can scan files for known formats and block access based on the content, even if the file has been renamed. eg if MyMusic.MP3 has been renamed to MyMusic.XYZ, content scanning will still detect the file as an MP3 and block access to it.
Taking the file specification "*.mp3" as an example, loading BlokFile with that specification will prevent:

Any new files with a .MP3 extension from being created.

Any existing files with a .MP3 extension being opened or copied.

Any existing files with a .MP3 extension being backed up.

Any existing files with a .MP3 extension being renamed to a different extension.

Any existing files being renamed to a file with a .MP3 extension.
The only operation that can be performed on a file that meets a BlokFile file specification is to delete it - and even that can be prevented
And yes, BlokFile will even prevent your backup system wasting time backing up those unwanted files.
In addition to blocking files, BlokFile can also be used for auditing who is accessing files. Configuration for auditing is as easy as configuring for Blocking - the only difference is that the access is not blocked - just logged, and the same logging options exist - console, logfile and email.
BlokFile can be used in place of Novells Auditing for filesystems, with a much smaller overhead and more flexibility than Novell's own solution.
